Yorkie

A puppy has arrived home

Before adopting
One of the great advantages of the Yorkshire Terrier puppies is their small size. In addition, in adulthood, they keep their small size until they reach, in most cases, 3.2kg, according to the FCI.

This makes Yorkies a perfect breed for families with children or elderly people, as they do not pose any danger or disturbance at home. However, it is necessary to take into account their territorial nature, which will tempt them to bark if any intruder dares to come home without their consent.

In the same way, the yorkshire already from puppies are nervous dogs, with a marked personality, restless, energetic and very playful. They adapt very easily to new environments or unfamiliar people, so they are also perfect for traveling with them without any concern, since we will not run the risk of the dog suffering from disorders or feel disoriented.

In any case, we cannot overlook their perfect sense of hearing, capable of picking up any sound or identifying any person from a quite far distance or even several stories high.

If you have it clear, do not hesitate: instead of buying, take a yorkshire terrier for adoption.

Tips for caring for a yorkshire terrier puppy
If you are going to adopt a yorkshire terrier puppy, make sure that it has not been separated from its mother before three months of age, since doing it at an earlier age can affect the correct development of the dog.

Pay attention to possible fraud or deception, as many people offer yorkshire terrier puppies that, in reality, are crosses or belong to other breeds. Your delivery should always be made after having provided the relevant vaccinations, never unvaccinated or dewormed.

During his first weeks of life, and until he reaches adulthood, you must provide special feed for puppies yorkshire terrier, plus fresh water.

Keep in mind that for your little Yorkie, these weeks are crucial for his development and socialization. Even if he seems shy or scared at first, do not be alarmed. These are normal symptoms at the beginning, since it is logical that he feels insecure after having been separated from the environment in which he was born and, mainly, from his mother.

Little by little you will have to accustom the puppy to face new situations, so that he will be at ease in new or unexpected situations. This will contribute positively to his socialization.

The first weeks of life of a yorkshire terrier puppy
It should be noted that Yorkshire puppies are dogs that demand little care or attention. However, it is necessary to take him to his first visit to the veterinarian for a general review, in addition to pay attention to some things so that their development is perfect:

Hair: although during their first months of life the yorkshire terrier boasts a black and straight hair, with time they grow quite a lot and their color changes to a fiery red. It is important to get them used to brushing from a very young age, so that their hair is always neat and does not form knots. Otherwise, when they grow up, they may object to it or have some problems.
Teeth: as it happens with the hair, it is necessary since the yorkshire are small to accustom them to the cleaning of their teeth. If you do not know how to do it, you can consult our care guide, where you will learn how to act from the beginning.
Hypoglycemia: given their energy and activity, yorkshire puppies are very prone to suffer hypoglycemia. Therefore, make sure they drink enough water and food to keep them in perfect condition. If you notice them sluggish or absent-minded, give them some water with sugar. If the situation does not improve, go to the vet as soon as possible.
Feeding: a newborn Yorkshire can get used to eating only what it needs. To do this, provide him with a bowl full of food and check that he eats normally, paying attention that he eats without overdoing it. Otherwise, offer him only a small portion of food (the manufacturers mark the recommended quantities according to the age/weight of the puppy).
Training: the first months of the baby yorkshire puppy are perfect to start with the training. The first thing will be, probably, to learn to do their needs in the street or, in the case that still can not leave the house, we must indicate which is the corner of the house enabled for it. Show him with soakers or newspaper which is that place. Arm yourself with patience and affection, he will learn sooner than you think.
When should the first visit to the veterinarian be?
The first visit to the vet should be mandatory when a yorkshire puppy arrives home. Whatever its origin, for our health and that of the dog itself, it is best to go to a qualified professional to perform a thorough examination of their health. Only in this way, we can make sure that everything is in order and, if not, we can remedy it as soon as possible.

You have to know that, except in specific cases, it is not recommended to take in yorkie terriers less than two or three months old, since preventing these puppies from enjoying their mother’s attachment and the care and protection she provides them can have a negative influence on the yorkie’s health. If you want to know more about this, don’t miss our Care Guide.

If, at first sight, the puppy does not show any symptoms or signs that make us think it has any kind of problem, it is normal for the dog to remain in quarantine locked up at home for at least 48 hours. After that time, we can go to the veterinarian to perform the check-up and prescribe the required care.

The choice of veterinarian
In most cases, the choice of veterinarian will be conditioned by the proximity to the home or domicile. In other cases, factors such as recommendations, the prestige of a certain clinic or professional, or simply having had good experiences in the past with other dogs or animals, have an influence.

In any case, the first visit should be made with the puppy’s yorkshire puppy health card. This document must be provided by the person or entity that makes the transfer of the animal and must be up to date with vaccinations and deworming performed. In addition, it must include information about the microchip, for identification, if it has already been placed on the dog.

With all this information, our trusted veterinarian will be able to establish a vaccination and deworming schedule according to the needs of our Yorkie and attend him with all the guarantees.

What should the first visit to the veterinarian be like?
During the first visit to the veterinarian, the professional should examine and carry out a general review of the state and appearance of our yorkshire terrier. It is important to take advantage of this moment to solve all the doubts and concerns that you have regarding the puppy’s health, the care and attention that it needs, as well as everything related to the next consultations, revisions or vaccinations.

The veterinarian should pay attention to all parts of the body of our yorkshire: eyes, ears, mouth, limbs, genitals, lungs, hair, skin, heart … A simple checkup will allow the doctor to certify the health status of the puppy.

The vaccination card
All puppies must have their vaccination card and, wherever they go, they must be accompanied by it. The veterinarian will be the one who, at his discretion, will decide which vaccination program to follow, depending on the health of the animal, the region in which it lives or the epidemiological situation.

In general, it is common to establish a vaccination schedule for the Yorkshire Terrier puppy in which the prevention of infectious gastroenteritis due to parvovirus (P), infectious hepatitis (H), distemper (M) and leptospirosis (L) is contemplated, according to this pattern:

From 8 to 9 weeks of life: first MHPL vaccination.
At 11 or 12 weeks of life: second MHPL vaccination.
At 9 months of life: MHPL booster dose.
Thereafter, annual recall of the MHPL vaccine.
Regarding rabies vaccination or other respiratory diseases such as those that usually occur in kennels, it will be the veterinarian who will assess their immunization. It should be noted that in Spain, in some autonomous communities it is mandatory to vaccinate dogs annually for rabies by law.

What diseases can my yorkshire terrier puppy have?
If you have a yorkshire puppy at home or you are going to receive it in the next few days, you should know that dogs of this breed, especially during their first weeks of life, are prone to suffer hypoglycemia given their great energy and activity due to the particular character that identifies them.

Make sure that, especially during the first days, your puppy takes enough water and food to keep him in perfect condition. Also, before welcoming him, ask his previous caregiver what kind of food he eats, so that he does not experience any kind of rejection or disorder.

If you notice that the dog is sluggish or absent-minded, give him some sugar water. If the situation does not improve, go to the veterinarian as soon as possible.
